Ok I decided to start a blog as so many other people have done.
I don’t really know what I’m going to write in here but no doubt I’ll think of something.
Oh I know what, this site is being hosted on my own server in my spare bedroom. I decided to try the useful information found at DSL/Cable webserver to see how simple it was.
First thing I did was to build myself a server from spare parts that I had lying around. I had to go and buy a case and a cheap 2nd user graphics card but that was all. I then aquired a copy of Ubuntu Linux and installed it onto the new server box. This all went swimmingly until I tried setting up the server side of things. Not knowing much about servers and such like I was having lots of problems getting it to work until I found an excellent tool called ISPconfig and a tutorial on how to set it all up.
Now I’m trucking, this web stuff is easy after all. Next thing was how the hell do I get my server onto the www? again thanks to DSL/Cable webserver there is a section on DNS which helped a lot and I eventually went to ZoneEdit where you can have 5 free zones, allowing up to 5 sites to be handled through their DNS servers for free. Yippee I now have a web presence.
Now I started designing a site for some friends who own a bar in Turkey and again with my limited knowledge of of web programming I got a simple site up and running. This wasn’t really very professional looking and I decided to delve into CSS but as I’m a bit lazy I found it somewhat tedious, that was until I saw a few sites using a blogging called WordPress and immediately thought this is for me. Fully script driven, customisable and easy to use so I decided to give it a go.
Now the site is looking a lot more like I imagined it should but I didn’t like the layout. This is where the customisable bit comes in, you just search for some themes, find the one which best suits (or is closest to) your needs and customise that. Ok now I’m on a roll, using Wordpress I decided to set up a family website so we can all keep in touch. Then came this site and a new blogging tool called TextPattern. Although I still feel that WordPress is the easier to use I thought I’d give some time to TextPattern.
Next thing I decided was to try a forum and decided thet phpBB would suit my purpose and although there were some teething problems I eventually got a good enough grasp of PHP & CSS to integrate the forum into the main site theme. Now it’s definately looking more professional.
I am now embarking on a far more adventurous task for yet another site which will see me try to integrate the login/register process for both forum and main site into a single section so that when a user registers or logs in they are registered with both systems. This I have to do as I would like the forum and certain areas of the site accessable only to registered users. Links to this new site will be posted when it is up and running.
Update 16-Aug-2007
I have since returned to using Wordpress as I originally mentioned I think it’s easier to use. I have found some other web applications that I will be trying out in the near future so there may well be many future updates.
