
Thirteen things about Scouser’s home city of Liverpool
1… Most importantly, Liverpool has 2 top flight football clubs, Everton (who are the oldest) & Liverpool (who are the most successful British football club in history).
2… There are 2 cathedrals (situated at opposite ends of the aptly named Hope Street, the Anglican cathedral (which is the largest Anglican cathedral in Britain) and the River Mersey.
5… Liverpool was once one of the world’s largest ports to the extent that by the beginning of the 19th century, approx. 40% of the world’s trade was passing through the docks at Liverpool.
6… It was profits from the slave trade in the 18th century which enabled Liverpool to grow..
7… Liverpool was involved in the American civil war. The last Confederate ship, the CSS Alabama, was built at Birkenhead on the Mersey and the CSS Shenandoah surrendered there.
8… Liverpool is sometimes referred to as the capital of North Wales.
9… In 2004 Liverpool’s waterfront was inscribed as a UNESCO World Heritage site, the justification is Liverpool’s importance in the development of world trading system, dock construction & port management.
10. In the 1960s Liverpool became alive with the advent of The Beatles and Merseybeat.
11. The Ferry ‘cross the Mersey as imortalised in song by Gerry & The Pacemakers does actually exist see here.
12. The coordinates for Liverpool are 53°25N 3°W.
13. The maiden voyage of Titanic was originally planned for Liverpool, but relocated to Southampton — no part of Titanic was actually constructed in Liverpool.
